Help with finding a printer

Options
Hi everyone

I know there is already a new-ish thread on here with some printer recommendations but that one is mainly for photos - though I have noted some of the recommendations already, so thanks for those.

I'm looking for a reliable printer, possibly with a scanner, for up to £200 with either refillable cartridges or ones which can be replaced through one of the websites around, eg printerinks. I don't really want to pay for the manufacturer's cartridges though I will do if any of you think it will help with reliability.

I've currently got an HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 wireless which is trying to drive me insane (it nearly succeeded this morning) as it keeps refusing to print. I work from home and am self-employed so I really do need a reliable printer.

My operating system is Vista if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance, any advice will be much appreciated.

See if any of these help

If not, how important is the scanning quality, and do you want another HP?

If mainly photos then look towards the kodak range of multi function printers

If you do a lot of printing, may one with a continuous ink system so you effectively top up in bulk?

Thanks for the links santer, I'll have a look at them later. They may get me round the problem for now but I think it's going to be a new printer anyway as this one has been nothing but trouble since the day I installed it:(

Scanning quality - really just for storing paperwork and receipts in case the originals get lost. I need to be able to print a legible copy if I need one but don't need top quality.

    And definitely not another HP

Thanks bengalknights, I'll have a look at them anyway though it's mainly documents that I print.

Thanks cootuk, I'll have a look at that I've heard about the system but not read up about it so far, it would solve the cartridge issue I guess.

    Worth a look

    http://www.epson.co.uk/Store/Printers-and-All-in-Ones/Epson-Stylus-Office-BX305FW-Plus/Overview

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Stylus-Office-BX305FW-Printer/dp/B005X4X5UA/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1343140913&sr=1-1

You can also get refillable cartridges for this printer, which has the added advantage of being able to use them with head cleaning flush if the nozzles block

eek £200 on a printer.. you can get perfectly good epson printers etc for £40

I have an Epson SX235W, wireless printer, scanner, copier, it is IMO an
excellent printer for the money, £39 at the moment on Amazon

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Stylus-Sx235W-All-In-One-Printer/dp/B005LLE7UM

Compatibles are readily avaliable, takes T1295 and T1285 range of inks
about £9 for 3 full sets on ebay, you can get refillables for £10 a set, then
bottles of ink for a couple of quid each. a CISS is pointless really, refillables
are essentially the same, but without the pots of ink you can knock over and
wires to get caught on stuff

IMHO Canon multifunctional printers are good, have a look at the MG5250 or the MG5350 both reliable - the Canon paper feed mechanism is excellent. Based on experience, I generally rate Canon above HP, & HP above Epson.

However if you do a lot of printing especially in mono, then a laser printer would be worth looking at - both Brother & Samsung models are worth a review.

If I was doing mostly mono printing in volume and requiring occasional colour printing with a scanner - I would consider perhaps a cheaper multifuntional eg Canon Pixma MG4150 (around £60) and then a Samsung ML-2955DW (around £85, or a little more if you wanted wireless) laser; an additional advantage would be a built-in backup printing capability for those little emergencies.

PS If you want automatic double-sided printing, make sure the model(s) you purchase have duplex capability - a lot of the cheaper models don't.

Thank you santer, im-lost and robmar0se for your recommendations:A Much appreciated and I'll check them all out

im-lost - I really don't want to pay anything like £200....... if I can get something which is reliable much cheaper than that then I'm happy:D

    Thanks again for your time.
