Makro

Wonder if any of you can help - I've seen lots of people talk about shopping in Makro and have been wondering whether it's worth joining? I currently am a member of Costco - is it basically the same or better / worse? What are the ranges Also I had a quick look at their website but not much info on joining - mum's a civil servant and OH is a lawyer - does anyone know whether we'll qualify through either of their professions (I know we got Costco on both of them). Does it cost to join?

You have to be a legitimate business to join. You will need to prove that you are trading etc. Having said that you can always borrow someone else's card and use that.

We always used to buy nappies and cat food there as it was noticably cheaper if you were prepared to buy in bulk. However many things are very similarly priced to the cheaper supermarkets without the option to buy in small quantities.

Best thing is to borrow someone's card and go and have a look.
  • I found washing powder and cat litter were the only things we ended up buying (if we could avoid the sweetie aisle that is :o )

As we rarely buy brand names, I found by the time we'd added VAT onto the price shown (if applicable) there wasn't a lot in the price of what we'd normally pay TBH.

    i agree with landyandy.....

take a note book and pen... and write the prices down of this you would be interested in buying..... and when you get home work out the individual price...... dont forget ..to add the vat... where need be....

its only certain things i have bought there..... fruit /veg..... is naff quality imo.....

so for us it was only certain items.. when they were on offer.... like washing powder... t. rolls .. disinfectant etc.....

it doesnt cost to borrow a card and have alook... you can see then if it is worth you going there...

  • My partner has a card and we've been a few times, but i find that i can always find things cheaper elsewhere.

Plus you always forget about the VAT and end up spending much more that you bargained for.

The only thing i like going there for is the food section. We sometimes buy a large piece of beef (£25) and chop them up into steaks, this works out good value and they have the odd specials on.

You do have to be a company owner or be able to use a registered company address.

I personally think that Makro has more choice but that personal items, washing powder and detergents are cheaper at Costso.

What is good about Makro is that you get the Makro Mail through the post each month and there are bargains to be had out of there!

if you print a letter head from your own computer with a company name (any) and you will be able to get a card, there is no VAT registers that they check to see if the company is trading
    good luck.
i get post from them and the makro mail deals are real good (but most are what you dont usually buy)

we buy our tools from there simply because we get a full refund if they break within the first 12 months.
Many items are more expensive than elsewhere. They do some good offers though occasionally.

  • I got a Makro card through telling them on the application form that I run the canteen at work....which I do but it is only for 6 people and not the 90 odd that work in the building......
