Camping in Italy - ideas needed

Our family and friends have decided to try camping this year, as we usually do the "self-catering cottage in the Uk" holiday. However, the general consensus is that we are all going to Italy.

I know nothing about the country and am not having much luck finding a decent site. I've been on the usual Keycamp/Eurocamp websites, but their prices are extortionate - £900 for a tent in the summer holidays!

All we are looking for is a nice campsite in northern Italy (as we are all driving down there) that allows you to pitch your own tent, has nice facilities, is near the beach (my idea!), and can cater for at least 6 adults and 2 children (4/5 tents). It can't be too expensive, either.

Please help with ideas of areas, camp sites, travelling there, etc. I would be really grateful

  • Hi

We have been camping in Europe for a few years now but never Italy. Have a look at the Alan Rodgers Camping Guide. We have always found this very useful when looking for a site and have always been impressed by some of the recomendations

Lido di Jesolo is a holiday resort close to Venice. There are several camp sites in the area which are listed on the site above.

We've not been yet but are going there in late May.

If you are in the North I'd suggest somewhere around Florence - it's very beautiful and there are campsites in the hills nearby which give great views but also are on direct transport routes. I stayed there once but of course can't remember the name of the campsite.

Just watch out for the lizards visiting - you won't want to leave your tent open at night anyway :)

We were going to go last year & a friend gave me the following links - he assured me they were good sites but I can't vouch for them myself

    Thanks guys

I'll have a look at these places. More here than what I could find on the net. Cornishpirate - I never thought about looking at camping guides, but I shall follow that up, thanks.

Belfastgirl - Florence is an area we were considering, so I shall go find out some more about it. I jsut told my husband about the lizards, and he's looking at me strangely now, lol. I don't have a problem with them, but I can imagine the language (him) if one got in the tent in the middle of the night - think we'd get chucked off site :p

While I'm following up this info, more links and recommendations will still be welcome, including what the drive is like to Italy from the UK (and Holland if anyone knows).

lists hundreds of campsites in Italy
The ones in Venezia are very popular. Union Lido, Marina de Venezia and Ca Cavio book up fast for high season .They are huge with private beach's, pool complexes and lots of facilities . Take plenty mosquito repellant. We got slaughtered last time we went.Dont let that put you off though, just be prepared, as this is a fantastic area for a holiday.
Venice and Lido Jesolo are close by. Lake Garda is only 2 hrs.and Croatia is only 2 hours drive
It is virtually motorway all the way, across Italy bar last 20 miles if going to the ones I reccommended above.
