Named driver and no claims

My husband & I are moving to Norfolk in October and my parents have already said that I could be put on the insurance for Mum's car for days out with our girls.

Is it possible for me to be a named driver and build up a no claims which I could use when my husband & I have the money needed to buy and maintain a car ourselves? My husband thinks that the only company which does this is Admiral and they've patented this scheme. I didn't think that a service could be patented and that other insurance companies can offer the service to named drivers.

The plan is that I will at least contribute to the cost of being a permanent named driver, hopefully I'll be able to pay the full amount, even if my parents pay their insurance annually, I'd probably only be able to afford to pay for being a named driver monthly.

Thanks to anyone who can answer this one.

Directline do it too but I wouldn't be asking my parents to select an insurer just based on this.

Interestingly, I rang Direct line about this and was told that the no claims you build up(on someone else's insurance) is not the same as a normal no claims bonus, and no other insurance companies would recognise it, its just for Direct Line!!! I thought it was a real con!!

Thanks for the replies, I'm trying to figure out if it's better for me to be named driver on the policy Mum has or go with esure or one of the other companies which do insurance for people in the situation I'll be in. Not owning their own car but having use of someone else's, also wanting to build up no claims.

I think they are correct. These 'bonuses' are usually only valid with that company. Anyway, as Clapton says, its not always cheaper.

For the first year of insuring an additional car in the named-driver's own name, yes.
Privilege gave my wife a full NCD as named driver. We insured an additional car with them, in her name. Then after a year she got a better quote from someone else, so switched. The NCD had by now become universal, and transfered to the new insurer.
