I am pretty sure this isn't legal but...

Yes... it wouldn't be difficult, afterall. The new expiry date is often 2 or 3 years after the previous isn't it? So surely not that much guesswork involved.0 -

Evidently they could use the old details.
Yes, I noticed that and with hindsight wondered if that's because they fully intended to update the details for me if I didn't act, and hoped they would be successful.0 -
Your packages may not be renewed if you do not update
The key part is may, it looks like it either did or they will bill you later. They have no incentive to cut you off even if it doesn't go through, they will want paid regardless.
The only way to be sure was to cancel before the renewal, ignoring it never makes it go away.0 -

After a few attempts your CC provider would flag up such behaviour as potentially fraudulent. Have you asked the CC provider how many times they tried to take the payment?0 -
i'm pretty certain the credit card company would have flagged this if a company was trying repeated combinations of expiry dates to get the payment to go through. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Your AutoRenew Payment Card has Expired
Your packages may not be renewed if you do not update
Basically means "you signed upto automatic renewal, your card has expired when we renew it may not go through"
As in they will try but it may not work.0 -
They obviously use a Continuous Payment Authority. I've had one of these work because the account linked to the card was still open when the card was 10 years old!
CPA's do not rely on your card details being up to date. As long as the card account is still open, and they used the details at least once whilst they were still valid, it will go through.0
