Help with mortgage during unemployment

Can anyone help with this please? A brief history: I was on incapacity benefit from 2008-2010 and also got help with the mortgage. Got a temporary job in 2010 which ended in April 2011 and I am now on JSA. I've been told by my work programme advisor that I am entitled to help with the mortgage again. But the Money Advice expert that she referred to me says I am not because you are only entitled to two years worth. I've had almost two years worth during the first lot of unemployment.

I've tried reading the rules myself but can't work it out and the Benefit Helpline have not answered my telephone calls (I've spent 2 lots of 30 minutes on hold to them today).

So what I am asking basically is: is it one lot of two years that you are allowed or can you claim it twice?

I hope you understand what I am asking!!!

Thanks.

  • I would be interested to know the answer to this also, it is not something I have come across before. My thinking is that as your previous claim relates to a period of incapacity, which would not be time limited, and that it was some years ago, you should be entitled. However, I could be completely wrong on that!

If no one can give a definitive answer, I would recommend applying anyway. The worst they can say is no.

(Edit: Can I clarify - have you had help with the mortgage at all in 2011/12?)

My last day of work was 31st March 2011 so I had three months help during the 2011/12 year.

Sorry I made a mistake with the years. I've amended them! The job lasted almost one year but it is possible to have a temp job for 3 years and longer in the public sector!
  • Your change in dates changes things significantly! No, you will not be entitled to help with mortgage interest again during your current claim.

Yes I got IS with my IB claim - it was only a matter of pennies though!

I thought myself I wouldn't be entitled but I will give them a ring this afternoon (I understand I've got more chance of getting through in the afternoon!).
