Cherries

I am so happy, I have never successfully grown anything in my life, I planted some £10 fruit trees 2 years ago and my cherry tree has this year produced fruit, I ate my first cherry from it today and was suprised to find it was sweet when everyone had been telling me that they would be sour. There are some completely red one and some that are still turning. I don't really have a question just felt like bragging I have already told everyone at work and they didn't seem that interested or prepared to match my enthusiasm. Although I would welcome any tips, I have 2 plum tree that I have yet to see anything on other that flowers.

I love it when something that I plant and nurture survives and/or bears fruit. I normally kill everything instead!

Well done and enjoy eating them! :)
  • Thank you, I am the same I have flowers that just look so sorry for themselves, This was my first attempt and to be honest when i planted them I did expect them just to wilt away, i'm not exactly greenthumbed so it was a nice suprise when I saw the buds appear after the flowers disappeared and watch them grow and slowly turn red, still everyone told me they would be inedible and soar so I was suprised to find it sweet.

It's probably cherry Stella which besides being a dessert cherry is also self-fertile, the plums are probably incompatible and so don't cross-pollinate, hence no fruit.
  • I have been looking at pictures of cherries to try do find which ones I have and they resemble rainier cherries at the moment i assumes they were still to turn red but they look like these now

Have not the dicky birds been feasting on your cherries?

If you want easy to grow, try courgettes and leaves such as Swiss Chard, but use slug pellets!

Fantastic - I know how you feel as I planted a £4 Aldi Morello cherry tree last year in a planter and this year I got 850 grms of fruit. Cherry pie this week!

Well done OP, my Sunburst cherry only had 4 on it this year despite being covered in blossom, the wind & rain stopped the bees coming out

    Here's looking forward to 2013
