Washing machine will not fill

Hi!

My hotpoint washing machine won't fill with water. When I turn it on I can hear the water going into the drawer but then it stops and the prewash light flashes. Hotpoint website says there is a water supply problem. I have checked the hot and cold water supply they are both turned on and no kinks in the hoses. Plus I left it turned off overnight to see if it reset itself but no change.

Anybody any idea what the matter could be?

Thanks

Is the drawer blocked? Remove it and clean out any soap scum.
If it's flowing into the drawer but not on into the drum, there must be some blockage.

We had a similar problem on the old Samsung and it was the water out pipe. Check that it has no leaks (must have a cut off somehow)

As above, check the outlet pipe is not blocked. My eldest lad moved into a new house and his mate plumbed his washing machine in for him. It would not run because the outlet pipe went into a sink waste that had not had the blanking plate cut off. If the machine cannot empty it will not fill. If it is an older machine or has been plumbed in for a while check the lint/fluff filter is empty, this is usually located at the front of the machine behind a square door or behind the lower panel at foot height.
    Good luck.

    Thanks everybody!

I have checked the drawer and it isn't blocked. The water is getting into the drum but it just stops and nothing else happens. Only filling with small amount water.

Hintsa and Oldsoak I will try the outlet pipe tonight.

Sounds to me (used to be a washer engineer !) like the pressure switch has become bunged up,they regularly get blocked with soap powder scum, the pressure switch controls many functions one being the filling cycle. Less likely to be the solenoid valve as you are getting some water in the machine so you can rule that out. Even less likely to be a blocked soap outlet as you would then have no water in the drum but you would have water all over your kitchen floor.

One other thing it could be is the programmer but I would have a look at the pressure switch to start with.

Cheap and easy to fix unless its the programmer, but I suggest you get a washer engineer to do the job as it can be fiddly.

Check your pump isn't blocked, the machine will stop taking in water if it detects your machine wont empty properly. check the filter (should be a flap on the bottom of the front panel with a screw in filter), failing this check your water outlet isn't blocked or raised too high.

If its not your pump\filter or outlet, its time for a plumber or new machine.
