Rental deposit help

Hi all

We recently left a property and the landlord is wanting to take some of our deposit for certain items. One item we threw away after asking the landlord which he said was ok, now he said we didn't have that conversation. The deposit is help with the agent so is secure for the time being and I asked the agent if I could replace the item myself rather than pay £££ for the landlord to replace and she said that was fine. I then received a call saying he has already ordered the item and wants the money.

My question is can a landlord order item which they want money for before consulting with the tenant and then demand that money?

What can I legally do?

Cheers
