Car insurance question

Hello,

I am doing a quote for my car on Confused.com. I am the policy holder and I have added my father as additional driver.

Right at the end of quote, it asks who is the main driver and how much no claim bonus do you have.

So if I were to select my father as main driver, would I still be able to use his no claim bonus. He has 7 years no claim bonus and I have none.

So in short, I am the policy holder and my father is an additional driver and also main driver of the car. Can I use his no claim bonus or it has the be policy holder's one?

Thanks

Who will be the main driver?
If you, then to use your father as the main driver to get a cheaper quote would be classed as 'fronting'
Does your father have access to another vehicle? If he is already using his noclaims discount on another policy, even if he was the main driver, he would not be able to use it again

It is very rare to find a parent is the maindriver, of a car you own, and are policyholder of. Insurers take a lot of convincing if you make any claim. They're happy to let you set up the policy though.
If he has a car in his name, he can't use his ncd twice. You can't use his ncd on your policy. From the way the question is asked, they are expecting the policyholder to be the main driver. Any other option you are best phoning to check.

Thank you for the reply. It clarifies everything.

My father has access to another car where he uses no claim bonus so I guess I'll not be able to use ncb.

I understand insurers can refuse claims when they believe fronting has taken place but my question is, will I be fully legally covered if my father is indeed main driver?

People are somewhat jumping to conclusions that the OP is a young driver and thus issues of fronting. My much older brother (40 at the time) did loan my father a car for a while and thus had exactly the same situation where my father was the main driver but it was easier to get insurance with my brother being the Ph given he was the vehicle owner & keeper

That said, particularly if you are young then you need to consider the accusations of fronting.

As has been said, an NCD can only be used on one policy at a time and so you need to ensure your father isnt using the NCD on another vehicle. Likewise NCD are generally only accepted for 2 years before they "expire" so if your father has been carless for a while this also should be confirmed.

Personally I have never heard of an insurer accepted an NDs NCD even if the ND is the main driver. Doesnt mean none do but you certainly should check with whichever insurer you go with BEFORE buying that they have correctly marked who is the PH and who is the Main Driver and they know who's NCD is being used.

Assuming father's NCD is not being used on another policy, then you can do this with RAC. (In fact they will only accept the main driver's NCD, irrespective of who is the policyholder)

Who gets the NCD when you decide to leave with RAC? With how a renewal notice/ schedule is normally laid out it would certainly be the Ph

Not with RAC, as previously posted, they only accept NCD from the main driver, and only give it to the main driver at the end of the policy year, irrespective of who is the policy holder.

Also, (OT but FYI), DOC cover is also only given to the main driver, irrespective of who is the policyholder.
