Closing my Lloyds bank account

Does anybody have any idea if you can close a standard current account over the phone with Lloyds TSB?
I don't have time lately to go in person to the branch but don't want to spend ages on hold just to find out I can't close it this way!
Do you know what information I may need to have to hand in order to close it? I haven't got any recent statements, just my account number. I believe there's not much more than 5p in the account if that, I've not been using it for years.

When I did, I had to go into branch to sign paperwork to close it.
I'm quite sure you'd have to go into a branch, otherwise you could be anyone on the phone trying to close someone elses account if you knew the details.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Do it in writing, not by phone!0

You do need to go into a brancnh, but you don't need any info apart from the account number and the ability to provide a signature which they will check against their recorded signature held on file. They may ask for any cards you have on the account.0

Thanks all for the various advice - I had considered writing to them but I don't know what info to send. I think I will just have to make the time to visit them somewhen.0

Write to your local branch tell them the account number and sort code of the account you wish to close and sign the letter.

But why not withdraw the balance down to zero first?
It's literally pennies and I don't have time to go into the bank personally and I don't have internet banking with that account to do it online. Thanks for the help.0 -
In your letter give them the sort code and account number of the account you want any outstanding balance transferred to.0
