RAC join at the roadside

yes, fool that I am left it too late to set up RAC/AA cover and my car broke down on saturday. I ended up calling RAC and joining at the roadside - £108 I believe I paid. Being quite annoyed at the situation I don't remember all that was said and the documents haven't come through yet - but I believe it was about £80 membership plus 28 or something like that for on the day services, and that I could cancel the membership within 14 days if I changed my mind - does that sound right? Just wondering if I can cancel now and get the 80 quid or whatever back and then sign up again through Quidco etc. to get a reasonably cheap deal.

Sounds like the repairs are going to cost the best part of a grand so any extra pennies I can save are most welcome!

    Probably the other way round.

I'd be surprised if you're entitled to anything back given that you've used their service.

yeah possibly, but part of the fee was an emergency callout fee which you wouldn't normally pay if you were a member so I was hoping that it would just be if I used it again that I would then be commited to the whole amount. Having looked at their website today seems if I could have got to a computer then I could have signed up online for a normal fee and then I would have had immediate cover and could have then rung up and said I had broken down - oh well, you live and learn!

The service has now begun and been used, you will be very lucky for them to accept a cancellation
Your right to cancel is set out in our terms of membership. You are entitled to cancel your membership up to 14 days following the start date (or renewal date) of your membership, or the date you receive your Terms of Membership, whichever happens later. If you have not made a claim or used our service within the first 14 days we will refund the cost of your membership. If you cancel the membership after 14 days no refund or credit can be applied.

thanks for quoting that bit - I think that is probably what I heard being read out over the phone but considering I was joining and getting help out all in the one call then that is redundant surely? I'll just have a good read when the stuff comes in the post to make sure :)

    Your question
Can I cancel my existing breakdown membership?
    Your answer

If you would like to cancel your membership, please call our customer services team on 0844 891 3111*. They'll take a few details from you and be able to help straight away.

    Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am to 9pm, Sat - 8.30am to 5pm, Sun - 10am to 4pm.

Online cancellations via the My RAC self service facility are not yet possible.

lets be honest. Breakdown cover is an insurance policy.nobody would buy it if you could simply call up and use it and then get a pro rata refund.

Just keep it running. You have 12 months cover for £9 a month. It's not the cheapest, but you have done it now. Next year cancel it and shop round fir a better value rescue service.

You are free to cancel but then they'll charge you their full non-member callout fee which OTTOMH is £150.
