Seperate Turntable and Need For Amplifier

I had a standalone turntable (you know, the sort you play records on) which used to plug into my ten year old Sony hifi system by means of a jack plug.

I gave it to my daughter, but her hifi hasn't got anywhere to plug it in. She's tried plugging it into her tv, but to no avail.

So - she probably needs an amp doesn't she?
What should she be looking for?

you probably need a pre-amp the has to accept a signal from a moving magnet or moving could stylus cartridge.

Older cartridges could be moving crystal, or some other type. Sometimes it is cheaper to change the cartridge. Also properly align the head.

The record signal also exhibits a special curve so cannot be fed back into any linear preamp due to RIAA curve, so needs equalization. Probably not expensive, just not that common any more.

Once the signal is out of the preamp, it can be fed into the sound card or amplifier
