Do I need to buy a new printer?

Options
I wish I had never got up this morning. Firstly I had a problem with Windows photogallery, which some very kind people helped me sort out.
Now I find that I cant get my printer to print out Cyan. I have tried changing the cartridge twice, cleaning the printer head several times, turning it on and off.......and so on.
I have a Epson Stylus SX435W and use replica ink, which has worked well.

Its only 3 months old but I use it LOTS, I print out at least twenty pages a day and often more. So working on the amount of wear it has had as opposed to an ordinary person I am wondering if its !!!!!!ed.
They are very cheap, only about 45 quid, I worked on the premise its better to get a cheap printer and use cheap ink for the time being.

Grateful for advice because I need it for work and will have to either get it working tomorrow or buy a new one.

Thanks

Pam (again)

If you print a nozzle check, does any cyan show?

If you Download purge.zip (59kb) and run the one for four inks and the single one for cyan, does anything show?

Have you tried a thorough uninstall? Those cartridge chips and Windows (I assume?) can mess up sometimes.

Sometimes you can get away with a general/standard uninstall but other times you need to remove left-over folders/files in the Program Files system folder, Application Data folders (which are hidden by default) and Registry (i.e. search and remove "SX435W" related keys). Delete those related folder/files and registry keys if need be, reboot the computer and then reinstall the printer from dvd.

With the ink; put in an empty/old one so the printer knows you have changed cartridges and see what happens (i.e. if it recognises the ink cartridge at all). If it does, then your current ink could just have a faulty chip.

  • Thank you both, no I cant get the cyan to work. I would have thought it very unlikely that more then one ink cartridge could have a faulty chip, I have put two new ones in. I will see if I can exchange it, I got it from ASDA. I will however try a bit more first.

20 pages a day is not really lots...at least I don't think it is. 7,300 per year if you print every day. 15 reams (500 pages) of paper a year or about a ream every 3-4 weeks. Each ink cartridge (£1) lasts me about 140 pages so about 208 of them in a year or a full change each week.

You could consider a monochrome laser printer for the majority of printing and keep the inkjet just for colour printing.

    Here is a weird one

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/122625-35-cyan-print-printers-lexmark-epson

Has an Epson, no cyan, installs another printer, no cyan.

Not heard of it before but maybe the photo gallery problem you had has done something odd

Are you able to install the printer on another PC

The above would be the best course, and if you still have a problem, then make a warranty claim - you did say it was only 3 months old?

Im pretty sure warranty is void due to the cheap inks...

Unfortunately cheap is only good for as long as the printer lasts, they often block up the printer heads.

Its just as cheap to get a new one than to have it repaired. it's going to be a minimum 2 hours @£20 = £40 + the cost of the print head.

If your printer still isn't working, try a branded cartridge - sometimes it will reset the printer & surely worth the cost for one cartridge?

As it is an Epson try the SSC service utility (Google it).

It doesn't support all models but it does let you do stuff that you can't do in the standard utility, like deep cleaning of the heads. You can also reset the chips on some models.
