Carpets in a rented house

Hi everyone,
So I rent and have been in the same house for 4 years.
Cream carpets. They were alright when we moved in. They looked like they'd had a good few years use and a few stains and iron marks etc.
I did once pay to have them professionally cleaned. It cost about £100 and didn't make much of a difference, although the guy did try his best. He said at the time that it was cheap carpet that was done pretty much.
What I was wondering was, would it be reasonable to ask my landlady to go halfers with me on getting new carpet down? For stairs and upstairs.
And also... has anyone had carpet fitted recently. Where would you recommend and how much was it?
I'm hoping it'll be £400-£500 max so half for me would be £250.
Any replies much appreciated
Thanks

Yes absolutely ask... Your landlord/Lady would rather keep a good tenant happy than risk losing them. First of all i would ask them directly you may be surprised and they will be willing to pay for all. Then only offer halfs if needed
Good Luck0 -
Martin Philips Newtownards is always worth a visit for carpet bargains.0

Cleaning carpets is pretty much useless with the majority of carpets out there. In this day and age, carpet is basically short term and disposable. As for cost though... depends on the area. Anything less than £10/sqm is going to be very crap. Don't forget the cost of underlay as well, a decent underlay can transform the feel (not the lifetime!) of even a cheap carpet but you will be talking £3/4 /sqm. Then there is fitting as well and this could be £3/sqm or more. For a half decent job I would think you are talking about £20/sqm... spend much less and it will be needing done again within 5 years.Always overestimating...0

for the landlord/lady this is a tax deduction for you it not ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

If your LL keeps your deposit and you take him to court the judge will (usually) give rental carpets a 5 year life span when assessing costs.0

We had this issue, cream carpets, we've been in here 4 years now also, I am cleaning the damn carpet every 6 months, its done now. We priced around and for our living room it cost £250 to get new carpet and fitted, and its as expensive for a cheap laminate floor, we are undecided what to do, don't really want to put a lot of money into it as we don't own the house.0

As a carpet cleaner obviously I am not pleased to read this first sentence, I think the majority of my customers who are pleased to rebook and refer me to family and friends would disagree too!0 -

Katie, if you end up paying half or needing to persuade your LL, it's worth measuring up the spaces you want to carpet and seeing if you can get end of roll or offcut pieces to fit - you may then also be able to negotiate a good deal with the supplier on underlay, grippers, fitting etc.If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...0
