However one biggie question remains in my mind for those who do own these devices - how do you pay for your Internet access on them? Do you buy a contract or PAYG "package" as part of the deal, that governs a built-in device rather than separately connected dongle?

I have the 3G + WiFi pad. When I'm in range of WiFi, I connect that way. When I'm out and about, I use 3G, and this is paid for with an Orange package that charges 5p per 100Mb, as I recall - they have a variety of other payment options for the Pad.

I bought the Orange payment package separately from the Pad purchase.

You don't pay for 'Internet access' as such - you pay for the data that's moved between the Pad and the Network. You don't pay for WiFi access unless you're connected to a network that demands you pay for it. If you connect to Internet via your Home WiFi, that's paid for from your existing broadband or other package, not separately when the iPad accesses it

Finally, what's the advantage of an iPad over an iPhone?

Ease of use with the larger screen, for one. I have big hands, and I couldn't imagine using Numbers (the spreadsheet app) on an iPhone, whereas it's manageable on the Pad.

Viewing photos on the Pad with its larger screen size is far preferable to an iPhone.

The Pad has YouTube built into the OS, so much easier to use than logging onto it as a separate website

iPlayer, C4OD and the other TV catch-up services - screen size holds sway here, too....

Maps are much more readable and easier to use on the large screen

    Does this help?

Regarding BT Internet - you don't need the software on a BT CD to get your home PC or laptop to connect to a Homehub. I have 3 PCs at home connected to the older Homehub and haven't run the BT CD on any of them.

You don't need any installs to get the iPad to connect to wireless networks outside the home, and in a similar way, you don't need any installs to get your iPad to connect to your Home Network. You just need the network access key, which is usually on a label on the back of the router.
