    i have never seen a tap base like that, what do the ends of the tails look like ?

    if the tails are threaded, then i would say looking at your pic that you have a faulty tap body, cause someone has forgotten to cut the threads in it, the tails (as a number of people have already said) should screw into those holes.

    Yep QC fail - take it back. And whilst you are at it buy some flexi tails - not too short and not too long (the Ikea fitting instructions hve a nice little diagram about not stretching or kinking or twisting flexis). The threaded end will need to be 10 or 12mm - check the copper ones. You are going to have to jump through hoops to make those copper things match up with your existing plumbing so make it easier for yourself now.

    When you have your tap take it to the plumbing section of a builders merchant and ask them at the counter for flexi tails to fit, this will ensure you get ones that fit and at half the price of the diy sheds.

    Or buy them on the internet and halve that again, sorry, I'm all for supporting the local economy, but surely the locals can match an internet supplier given no postage.
