If you are excluding HK & Macau try the Chinese Embassy as a starting point. Ours took about 5 days.0 -

Trailfinders did ours for us, even though we hadn't booked through themtravelover0

But, IMO, so worth it, it's a fabulous place to visit and stay, so much culture and so much more than we were expecting.
What time of year are you thinking of going?0 -
One thing to be aware of, outside MAIN tourist areas English is not widely spoken and you'll end up drawing pictures and pointing at things, but that's what travelling is all about.
If you can make yourself understood at all using a phrasebook you're doing damn well.0 -

We had an English/Chinese pictorial dictionery type book that was brilliant. It has tons of different sections, some really relevant such as shopping, eating, drinks, transport, tourism etc, others not quite so relevant but for a cost of about £6 or £7, well worth paying for.
Another tip is to always have the name of your hotel written in Chinese to show a taxi driver, although worth bearing in mind that some can't read.
It would be really helpful if the OP could say where they are visiting and what time of year...0 -

Good tip, at least in practice the numbers are usually the same.0 -
