Virus? if so which one,,

Options
We've got a couple of laptops in the office that appear to be haunted but more than likely it's a virus..

Virus checker isn't picking anything up though..

What's happening is that they'll just type away on their own and not just random words but full sentances and start dropping down menus.
I've got one next to me and it's typed.

"a time when the new server the document that still get your income. In fact is that the single - in Isreal this is same thing and then set# with an excel in spending millions od dollars from the route, a problem that the objects of one small problem anything else might not think we got some more than just the start menu go back to the first inning as the same as what you get all the big screen in the film is saying'

Anybody got any ideas? i'm having the week from hell and this isn't helping !!

cheers

ok first of all are you sure its not the techies messing around with remote desktop etc??

secondly have you got firewalls running?? if no maybe an idea to get one.

unplug the laptops from the network and see if this stuff still happens (if you can)

a couple of starting points that i would do...thats if you want to take advice from a student 'who is taking your taxes' ;)

I'm the techie, so nope... on the first one i disabled the infra red and also remote desktop.
No firewalls running on them as the only internet connection they have is via a network firewall. 1 of them hasn't even got the proxy settings in to access that and no dial-up connections enabled.
Both laptops have done it off the network, one has done it in Walsall, PReston and even on his dining room table..

now get off my taxes !!

Do you have any speech recognition software on the laptops? It could be that they're turned on or using the mic without you realising. This could cause this problem.

    Have a look HERE

    @Rex_Mundi
That could explain a lot of spam that I get.

Have you considered a literary agent for this new found 'talent'. Is this evidence of an emerging computer intelligence ?

Does it only happen in MS Office by any chance?

There is a language bar in MS Office. Can't remember where it is but I know someone who had this problem a while back. Turning off the language bar sorted the problem, it has speech recognition software built in.

It only affected laptops because they have built in micrpohones and most desktops don't.

If that doesn't work then I hope you know a good priest! :)

we did think it was speech recognition at first but what it's coming up with isn't what's being talked about... unless it's a bit hard of hearing.
One of the laptops has been working ok for at least six months before it started today

i'm thinking of flogging them on Ebay

When it's happening, have a look. Have you got sapisvr.exe running. Apparently this can cause it to look like your computer is going nuts on its own and give results like you are getting, even if the mic is not switched on.

There have been cases with bugs and this process.

Have a look at THIS page.
