Concerns over possible Fraudulent use

in Credit cards
Martin Lewis, an awsome and informative site, well done.
My problem is Amex informed me of two attempts to purchase goods/services from my account over last few Days and that they have suspended the card in question and have issued a new chip & pin card and a letter to folow? This worries me as the account was for balance transfer only, this card does not get used for purchases, have never used my PIN and never been near an ATM or other device. I was informed that the two attempts were blocked (possibly due to lack of full information by the intended user?) however I was also informed over the phone that they would not be able to tell me anymore information regarding the misuse, which again, leaves me concerned as to how this happened? I use online banking to make payments, and my internet security, I`m almost sure, is as tight as a Ducks !!!!!
I wish to know if there is any system in place that allows me to get further information as to how the information was gleaned by user, and what follow up action I should take. One idea was to get rid of the account alltogether, if there was no help forthcomming?
Any suggestions

You use the internet, theres no such thing as secure then!
Sometimes it just happens, sounds like you have taken all the precautions possible, change your internet banking passwords, and you have the new card coming, nothing more you can do0 -
i think you have no realistic chance of getting any information from then
partly because there is always the possibility that you may be complicit in the fraud and even if you aren't then a familty member or friend might have been.
and even if neither of these is on the table they wouldn't wish to comprise an investigation by giving you any information.
in any event they would see that it is them that is losing the money and not you.0 -
It may be a silly question but are you certain it was Amex that phoned up to inform you about these attempts? Did they only phone you (did they ask for any details from your card over the phone)?
I just want to be sure that the fraud wasn't the actual phone call and now they (scammers) may have some details they didn't have before......PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Hi Coupon-Mad.............
When at first AMEX rang me, I was actually sleeping (working nights) so I cut them off to digress the information and ignored the two call backs?.That said, I contacted AMEX in the normal way, submitting the correct information, and was reliably informed that it was their fraud department trying to contact me?
I dont even use the card myself? it is soley for the repayment of a balance transfer, (if you make any purchases on a card that has a balance transfer, you cannot pay off that purchase untill the balance transfer is paid back, that could get expensive?)only my AMEX has been affected. There is no way someone could have seen the card, as it is not used.0 -
Being a regular credit card tart I find the best way to assist security is to shred the card as soon as it arrives as if you say you're never going to use it what's the point of keeping it.0
