hypothetical question here..if she does go to the council and action is taken against the landlord and/or tenant but she struggles then to sell her house what could or should she do? I know she is struggling with debt and hoped to sell to get rid of the mortgage but if push comes to shove and she can't sell now after having to admit to the neighbour issue, would she be able to hand the keys back and walk away? I know she is stressed out and wishes she could just wake up one morning and pack her bags and leave.0

private landlord. as far as i know my friend had made a number of complaints to him about the tenant but no action was ever taken. she had kept records and times and dates etc but she is so tired of it all there is no fight in her now. she wants to go but the tenant would have won. she barely eats cos of the worry and i am scared she'll get ill.0

I feel really sorry for your friend. She is in a no win situation.
You can ring the Police anonymously, but they just tell you that they are busy, it's a saturday night, don't you know. Even if you tell them your neighbours are smoking pot, taking drugs, they tell you that they have no powers to do anything....they basically aren't interested. They tell you to call the council, who won't do anything unless you give them your name and address - and there's the catch - that's then on record and you have to declare it if you sell your house...even the man at the council said it's unfair. And at my council they won't do anything after midnight unless THREE people call to complain. Hmm, let's see, nasty family, partying on drugs all night, neighbours going to go on record complaining againt them? Not likely.
So they carry on with it....and these neighbours have BOUGHT their house so not even any way to get a LL involved....it's really unfair and this whole situation needs to be addressed to be more in favour of the victims....even when you sell up, you are going to feel awful because you know you are just passing the problem on, unless you sell to a MORE awful family that then one next door!!
Your friend needs to MOVE out of her house, stay with a friend, for her own mental health. Then get rid of the property, sell quickly, maybe one of those quick sell companies I've heard of on here, and just start over again. It's not fair, I agree, but she needs to get out of this situation for her own sake. This type of noise nuisance can drive people insane.....I wish her luck.
I really wish someone would bring a test case to sue neighbours for the detrimental value of their tenants (or themselves) on their property.....or maybe MSE would like to take up the cause? it's really an area that is long overdue. In fact, I'm so annoyed about it I am going to email Watchdog and ask them if it's something they would be interested in.
Too many people have to endure the misery of neighbours. We should all be able to enjoy our own homes without living in fear and dread of what those around us will do next.....grrrrrLess stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
Probably not an option for her. But if I was at my whits end and really had nowhere to turn, I would rent mine out to someone who would give as good as they get, if you know what I mean. Rent a smaller place and move back in a few years once the dust has settled.0
