Florida insurance confused ??

Hello I hope all is well.
Basically we are looking to got to Orlando next september.
My partner has diabetes type 2 and chronic asthma though fingers crossed is managing these conditions well at present.
I am confused as to how the whole health care goes in USA.
I know she is gonna need specialist insurance but what happens if she is poorly ?
Do we pay the cost upfront first then the insurance reimburse us etc or do we just send the invoices to the insurer ?
Any advice would be appreciated !

It all depends on the terms of the insurance.
The policy that I currently have requires that before any treatment is undertaken (unless it is an emergency), I have to get authorisation from the insurers and once this has been done, they will liase with the hospital/clinic to pay all of the bills apart from the £50 excess that I will have to pay.
My previous insurers required me to pay for all treatment and claim it back at a later date, but again I was still rerquired to get authorisation before any treatment.0 -
What you need is a specialist insurer where you declare pre-existing conditions.
The insurance will be priced to reflect this of course, but will give you peace of mind. And they will provide you with all the information you need in the event you need to claim.
Whatever you do, don't 'forget' to mention anything to the insurers or you give them a way-out, and don't scrimp on insurance especially going to the states.0 -
thanks for the advice.
bit clearer about the step by step now !
seems weird having to ring an insurance company first but thats the States eh !
if anyone could reccommend an insurance company I would appreciate it.

All insurance companies are different.
Our grandson was ill in Orlando and needed medical treatment - it was an emergency as such - but if we had been at home he would have been taken to the doctors.
We rang the insurance before contacting a doctor or anything else. They arranged for a doctor to visit at our accommodation (we could have gone to a medical centre - but he was projectile vomiting amongst other things, so the doctor visited us.
The doctor was amazing - gave him thorough exam, did a strep test, determined he had a chest infection too and gave us all of the medication he needed from her suitcase on wheels.
The cost at the time $800 and we had to pay our excess to the doctor - it had to be by credit card not cash - the equivalent of $200.
The medical practice invoiced the insurance company for the rest.0
