Short Eurostar break in Northern Europe

I'm thinking about booking a 4 or 5 day break in Northern Europe for me & my wife sometime in late September / early October.

I'd prefer to take the Eurostar from St Pancras and having looked a few possible destinations, Koln is coming out favourite at the moment.

Does anyone have experience of a similar short holiday, I'm looking at advice on the best people to book tickets with and also any hotel recommendations, preferably in the city centre and close to the railway station.

I took the Eurostar to Cologne (or Köln if you prefer) a couple of years ago and it was all very easy. I booked the whole lot (inc the Eurostar) through Deutsche Bahn. I stayed at the Renaissance hotel which was not that close to the train station but was in a nice quiet area and still fairly central - easy walking to the city centre.

Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels and then the ICE from Brussels to Cologne.

  • Thanks for that. Haven't booked anything yet but the Deutsche Bahn website is certainly much better than the Eurostar one. It won't give me details or prices for anything beyond late July.

Did you have a good time over there?

I've just looked for some fairly random dates at end September. I found the following:

Dep London St Pancras 27/09/2012 06:50
    Arr Cologne 12:15

    Dep Cologne 02/10/2012 15:43
    Arr London St Pancras 19:57

    Change in Brussels both ways.

Total cost for 2 adults (inc postage of 3,50 Euro) = 279,50 Euro.

We had a fantastic time, thanks. It was red hot and we were in Cologne during the Cologne Lights festival in July which we were not aware of beforehand. It was spectacular with illuminated boats and fireworks set to music over the Rhine. The streets were packed with people drinking the local beer (Kolsch) and generally having a great time. Beautiful city.

Guardian has some fantastic half-price Eurostar offers at present which might fit the bill. Book by 31st August travel by 31st December

check the destinations in the first box (eg paris £150 etc) for full details as the layout doesn't make the range of offers very clear!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
