Washing machines

We're about to move house and possibly leave our old machine behind. What makes should we avoid and who makes a decent machine for decent money (rough max budget £500)?

How long have you had your 'old' machine? Why not buy a new version of that brand if you've been happy with it?

If you're looking for recommendations, we like Zanussi.

Our previous Zanussi washing machine worked perfectly (was 8 years old) and was left in our old house when we moved. Our present Zanussi machines (a washer and a condensing dryer) have worked perfectly for 10 years.

Having just bought a machine and used it for a few months, can strongly rec the Bosch WFO2866.

    BENEFITS:
Small digital timer telling you how long the cycle is, with a countdown timer, so you know when it will be done.
Clothes come out with v little moisture, so less drying time.
Bosh reliability, and as I got mined from John Lewis, there is a 2yr guarnetee supplied form hte store, so no labour charges should anyhting amiss occour.

All this for £299, with no delivery charge. Fixed it in myself (cold water connection), so no need to pay the additional cost (approx £20) for connection!

    Hope that helps.

Agreed, Miele are the best but also very pricey. Friend's mother has a 25 year old one which has never gone wrong. But personally I'd want a new one after 15 years or so if only because the newer one have additional features like higher spin speed, more energy efficient, quieter etc.

    Does Phillips whirlpool still exist?

Ours is still going strong after 21 years, despite a little recent sabotage from our eldest child. She decided to do her first wash.....turned the knob anti-clockwise (it should be turned clockwise), and wondered why it came off in her hand !?!

Unfortunately she didn't break it completely (so I couldn't demand a new machine). Mr Pink-winged now does the washing, armed with a pair of plyers to turn the knob. This requires a certain degree of estimate. It is only a matter of time before he boil washes my delicate bits and pieces.

Can anyone help with a knob for a 21 year old machine, or recommend another machine?

I had this dilema two weeks ago. John Lewis has a 6KG load (AEG so they said) that comes out at about £430 from memory with a 5 year warranty. Miele have a 10 year warranty on several of their models at the moment - they are just introducing 6KG models in the UK as we speak. I have a zanussi that is about 18 years old. I wouldn't recommend them though - and wouldn't buy another (as I need to keep fixing it). Only reason I still have it is I am waiting to see what happens in the Siemens/Miele battle of their top end machines.
