Landlord causing havoc - police involved- What happens, what do I do?

Since May I have moved into a private rented property in the Black country. This is a property through a letting agency via a landlord.

Sadly, the landlord is not a nice man. He has extorted money out of all us demanding extra rent. Done NO repairs, and basically turns up at inconvinent hours. I have reason to believe he has ran off with our deposits and the previous tenant; me and my partner were forced to pay him back a £275 deposit by the landlord. I reported the landlord to my local council and they were investigating.

The day I reported him, he came round the house and said I ruined his reputation, how dare you etc. He was making calls while I was at work saying if we spoke to the council again, he would evict us.

At the start of this month - I was arrested for the police for allegedly sending racist messages to the landlord on a number that is inactive. My phone was confisicated by the police and I am on bail until August 14th.

After three weeks of hearing nothing, we rang the police. My partner spoke to them and they said I can have the phone back, but I will need to be interviewed as will my partner, brother in law and his girlfriend next week. They have said some evidence has came to light.

The last time the landlord came to the property was over a week ago. He was annoyed I did not pay rent and he was annoyed that his allegations of the council not paying housing benefit were refuted as we got a statement from the council. It seems, if we have a go at him, he is getting back at us.

I do not want a criminal record for a crime I did not commit, nor do I want my partner, or brother in law charged.

If you didn't send any racist abuse then you won't be charged with it.

From now on, do not communicate with your landlord other than in writing. Do not let him enter the property. Change the BARREL of the locks on both the front and back doors. Contact the Tenancy Relations Officer at your Local Authority for advice. Make plans for your onward move asap.
