best insurance for young male in a bedsit

am seeking advice re what's available ie. is it best to get contents insurance or individually insure the (few) items of value (eg laptop) - am expecting difficulties a)for a 21 yr old male b)being in rented/not overly secure premises. What do students etc do?? Are there companies that specialise?
