Going travelling & bank accounts...

Hi there,
I'm new - hello to everyone - and I've been looking around on the forums but can't see exactly the answers I need.
Basically, I will be travelling come Jan 2013 (all fingers, toes, eyes crossed) and therefore out of the country - but I am really worried about what to do with my bank account. It's a pretty simple Lloyds bank acct with a £300 overdraft - I don't really want to use it whilst abroad. Would it be best to close my bank acct?
Also I have a mobile phone contract which I'm pretty sure by the time I go travelling still have an extra 12 mths to pay. Is there any way of deferring payment till i'm back in the country or do I still have to pay this?!... any loopholes?! haha.
ANy advice if anybody has been a similar situation please do let me know.
Thankyou
MayK
