Looks like you have to get in touch with HL.

Under ordinary circumstances, this isn't a difficult question, but nowadays ...

I finally went for a combination of two ETFs (SLXX and ISXF) and a strategic bond fund. I could use individual corporate bonds with HL but would want to hold at least 20 bonds in different companies and with a good sector spread.

    Such as?

The long-term pick of the crop for close-ended is CGT, but it's on an eye-watering premium. I've been using Old Mutual Global Strategic Bond for a wee while as it's the closest I've found.

I wouldnt know the specifics, I only own foreign currency bonds. I think the whole deal is flawed in our own currency but at least index linked would be in demand if inflation rose I suppose

Unit trust is always open ? no premium except in the bonds themselves which is half the problem, buy what isnt popular but bonds have been incredibly popular for a long time now hence I dont think its a great strategy personally

Company bonds maybe but gilts? Are you sure you mean gilts as in government debt? The ones with governments not likely to go bust yield practically nothing, and some German ones actually went negative recently i.e. people were paying for the privilege of lending the German government money. Madness.

About the only the only ones I might consider are emerging market debt which you could access via a fund such as "Investec Emerging Markets Local Currency Debt", but it is not risk free by any means.

Monevator has some great articles on both gilts and bonds. I can't fish out links now as I'm off cycling, but will try later.
