Say I get a Travelex card and load it with sterling - if i go to Turkey and draw from an ATM can i select to withdraw in Lira and is this the same rate of exchange that i would get from my debit card minus the fee? also what happens with using it in a supermarket and how do i know the exchange rate at the till?:o

Vietnamese Dong will probably not be available so I'd go for the Lira.0 -
Suppose i deserve that answer - so essentially its like having my debit card without the charge? - and how does it work in supermarkets, by that i mean exchange rates, is it worth using or drawing out the cash?Bob_the_Saver wrote: »Vietnamese Dong will probably not be available so I'd go for the Lira.0 -
That will be the Travelex Cash Passport Globe
As long as you are charged in the local currency, what ever it is, then it will convert at Mastercard rate minus 1.49%.
If the ATM or shop offer to charge in £s, refuse. as this will be a "dynamic currency conversion" which will not normally be such a good rate0 -

Yes, this is a very common trick and you have to watch out for it. It's so easy to fall into conversation with the shop keeper or waiter and miss the fact that s/he has put the transaction through in pounds.0 -

Unless you do accept Dynamic Currency Conversion and pay in £(which, as has been said above, you should not) there's no way to know the exchange rate at the time of payment. The exchange rate used will be the rate at the time the transaction is processed, which may be a while after the actual time the transaction took place. So you'll have to put up with some degree of uncertainty, I'm afraid.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
:)So all in all - use Travelex to draw out the cash ( no cost) and pay cash in Supermarkets?
Can't see a better card than Travelex unless someone can advise different?0 -

Please use the correct card description, otherwise we have no idea as to which card your enquiry may refer.
If the Globe card, there is only a 1.49% charge for any transaction abroad. ATM or spending, it's the same.
Why oh why do people not take the time to check the board for the hundreds of posts(asking the same question) that came before them?0 -

As you know things change so fast with such things - not sure posting a repeated question is the biggest crime that will be committed today - however patronizing will be nearer the top than my crime0 -

No, lazy and annoying is closer to the top of crimes committed here.
Of course only people that actually contribute would notice.0 -
