iPad camera adaptor

Options
Hi Folks,

I've lurked for a while, fancied joining the chat!

Has anyone purchased an iPad camera adaptor from eBay? They are about a tenth of the price of an official 1 but I'm weary that they won't work!

Thanks for your help!

Let me get this straight - you spent, what - £400-500 on the iPad, and you want to buy a third party camera adaptor at £2.50 (with the Apple adaptor being £25) .....?

Doesn't this strike you as false economy? The equivalent of putting retreaded, second-hand tyres on a Ferrari. possibly.....

If it works, then why not!

£25 for two adaptors from Apple. One of which they can't even guarantee will even work with your camera/hdd/whatever via the USB connector. The second adaptor which (ONLY) takes an SD card.

If it's the same as the 7dayshop one then I can say it does work. I bought apple, mum bought that, and frankly felt for £4, if it didn't work, wouldn't lose anything.

This one from 7day takes SD BUT in addition to that, as an extra to apple, also takes Micro SD, MMC, MS DUO, MS, MS M2 Card & of course does USB in one little unit, instead of 2.

USB will depend on your camera, and how much power it will pull. You wont know till you connect your camera to it (and this applies to anything USB you put into it) This will be the case with both apple and generic.

If you get one to the similar size of generics, be aware that you will need a slightly wider gap at the bottom if you have a case on it, and especially a form factor fitting one, like the likes of hard back, or the griffin survivor. I fixed this easily by getting one of these. No need to remove case now. N.B there are cheaper UK ones, search ipad extender to find white, and cheaper ones.
  • Googler - I never thought of it like that, but as Lifeforms says, if I don't need to pay more, why do it.

Thanks for the link - think ill give it a blast!

I had an HDMI + USB adapter off ebay for my iPad 1 which worked great with iOS 4 but wouldn't work with iOS 5. Was a few people on the apple forum's who the official adapter wouldn't work with their iPad 1's either. If it's a 2 or 3(new) then I'd say try an ebay one, if it's a 1 take it to an apple store and try an official one before you buy.

I've bought two of the cheap ones of eBay. Both of them worked initially and then after a few months I got the message "this is not supported" when I plugged them in. Swallowed the bullet and bought an Apple one and it's been working fine for the past year.

There has been issues over updates where things "accessories" do stop working, and you get that message. I had it ages with my ipod dock, but it eventually sorted itself out. If you get that message after an update especially. worth googling to see if others have too.
