Barclays charges

I have just received my first ever bank charge from Barclays. Unfortunately I had a cheque presented much later than expected so didn't have money in the account. However, there were funds in the next day that would cover it.

Do Barclays offer any kind of good will gesture for first time charges? Whilst working at Nationwide we would cancel/refund charges based on certain criteria if it was a customers first charge.

Depends on your account status and relationship in my experience. Give them a ring, they can only say yes or no!

It is entirely at their goodwill, but chances are if it really is just a one-off they might refund it if you give them a quick call. Just don't expect to be able to keep doing it ;)

I'd be very surprised if they didn't waive this since it's your first charge - just as long as you learn the lesson about writing cheques as they likely won't refund in any further instances!

Its only £8 so not too excessive, but an £8 i'd rather not lose.

On another note. Will Barclays attempt to pay the cheque again?

Just off the phone to Barlcays. Unfortunately they wouldn't remove the charge despite have funds in the account to pay the cheque the next day. Which in other banks would be grounds to have it removed as a good will gesture.

Maybe now would be a good time to move to a bank with better customer service.

I was thinking as much. But the account isn't my main one. Plus i've just ordered a new free persoanlised card with them. Raking back as many pennies as possible.

Order a new PIN Sentry whilst your there, they are better quality (IMO) than some other banks like Nationwide and Co-op.
