You don't pay anyone else's debt-you obtain a new key when you move in.
We did get a new key. And every time we put £20 on it, £10 disappeared. Every time we called Eon, we explained that we had a new key and we were not the people who'd run up the debt. So then they would say it was sorted, we would no longer pay the Economy Seven rates and they had disassociated the debt from that meter. And then we'd top up by £20 and £10 would disappear, and we'd pay Economy Seven rates. They did tell us that if we paid £50 we could have the meter changed, but they couldn't say how long that would take. So we went back to our old supplier who did it all for free within a couple of days. I don't have the time or energy to mess about with a key meter, regardless of what my landlord thinks.0 -
Do they work out more expensive with any existing debt (on "average", I know it depends what deal/package you're on)? I've only ever had one and it was years ago in a shared house, when I was younger and didn't care about such things

Callie, under one of the Financial Acts, can't remember which one, you cannot be held liable for someoneelses debt. Hope E on refunded you for the money they took but shouldn't have. If they haven't then I'd be going to CAB with proof of money being taken.
It's one thing which concerns me for when we move to Norfolk in October that house we move to will have PPM with a debt on it. Hoping that meter will be a credit meter.0 -
You never pay for a previous occupant or a landlords standing charge.
If the key can't resolve it and they can't send a command to the pay point, they send out an engineer to do a decom/recom job.

Several points to pick out here:
1) Alaways contact the current supplier the day you move in and dont use any key left behind unless it is reporgrammed for you.
2) Supplier may require proof you are new tenant before debt is cleared. This is to stop people claiming they are new tenants when they are not.
3) Suppliers are more reluctant to remove ppm from rented properties unless they have been you supplier with a good payment record before. This may you to change suppier when you move in.
4) Some landlords may require a ppm to be refitted when you leave and they could charge you for this.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Changing to a credit meter for me is actually more expensive, but i do have very low consumption. Think i worked it out to be 20 months before i saw a return on my outlay of £55 for the meter. :eek:

If a meter has a debt on then it can be recommissioned. G4S do a lot of this kind of work, their meter readers do it - it's a very easy job and can take minutes depending on the type of meter.
However, some meters will incur errors, usually Landris & Gyr and often have to be subjected to multiple attempts and in the worst case scenario faulty meters replaced.0 -
I was with British Gas on prepayment and they wanted £150 to change. We switched to Eon, who have said after 28 days as a customer with them,they'll change them over for free. No contract, no minimum time limit etc. they are coming out in a fortnight, can't wait to have the freedom to shop around all tariffs and suppliers, also to not have to go to a shop to get elec/gas!0
