It will probably come across as a daft question , but here goes..
The wife wants to watch BBCI and a few other channels on the television , is it as simple as buying a HDMI cable and connecting the lap-top to the television ?

Yup. Just make sure you have both HDMI on your laptop and television (to state the obvious).
You may have to press Windows Key + P to make it flick onto your screen.0 -

restart the laptop with the tv plugged into it, if the picture looks odd sized, or doesn't fill it up. Then fiddle with the graphics settings to make it the best fit.0

Re-posted, apologies if I'm repeating myself.
On my Win 7 laptop I just plugged it into the TV and everything worked just fine. No fiddling with graphics settings at all.
I had to set the source on the TV as HDMI#1
The TV just acts as a giant monitor with good sound

Play around with your sounds settings, you might have to set your laptop to output audio over hdmi. What is the make/model of your laptop? The majority of computers with HDMI out can output audio over hdmi, but there are a few that can't.0 -
