Oh yes...they are wonderful!!! Not so much the recipe book (which a very kind lady on freecycle gave me, after I'd read the other two) but Hovel and Garden are amazing! I'm looking to move to Wales myself next year, and they certainly give a great sense of what you need to be able to do if you live in the middle of nowhere with very little money. (I think I'm up to it LOL!)

I'd love to find out what happened to The Wests, as they gave up the cottage at the end of the second book - anyone know?????

    Regards

    Kate

This thread is ages old but just been having a read. Don't know if this was answered later but...
If you want to know what the West's did next read "A patch in the Forest". I won't spoil it by telling you :)

I read this and it was good, but I preferred "A Croft in the Hills" because that lady lived there from the early 60s and is still there now - whereas the Hovel couple I think did not last long there.

I enjoyed "A croft in the hills" too.
The West's lived in their "Hovel" from 1965 to 1978. They then moved back to Bristol before retiring to the Forest of Dean (A patch in the forest)in the early 1990's. As far as I know they're still there.
    Lucky them :)

Croft in the hills was better for me because she had the same weather and was the same height up although further north. I enjoyed somebody to share the misery with. LOL!

Another interesting book which has just been published is "Millions Like Us - Womans' lives in War & Peace, 1939 - 1949" by Virginia Nicholson. Am still only halfway through it but it certainly provides full details of many of the hardships which women had to deal with during that era.

Incidentally, I understand that Elizabeth West's husband sadly died a while back. Don't know whether she's still living in their Patch of the Forest. Haven't seen any more books published by her since that one.

Thank you - I'll keep an eye out for that. Sounds interesting.
I am very sorry about Alan West. Although Elizabeth wrote the books he was a very vivid half of the story.
Like you I've not seen any further books.

Don't know which one you saw but a very good one is 'We'll Eat Again' by Marguerite Patten. It's a paperback so not too expensive. She wrote a couple of others whose names escape me and I have to trawl the house for them. If no-one else mentions them I'll find them for you.
