Best external HDD for back-ups/storage?

Options
Can anyone recommend a good quality external HDD that will work on both Mac and Win7 please?

Primarily want to use it for essential back-ups but also for storage of media/music to stream to other devices, either wirelessly or via USB. Have briefly looked at WD My Book but it appears to have mixed reviews and lots of failure reports :(

  • Any USB external hard drive would do, I would recommend Seagate or Western Digital. If you are after something to use wirelessly you will need one that plugs into a router/home hub. I know you have said you have read mixed reviews but WD make some of the best hard drives. I have used them for years, and touch wood, have never had a failure. lucky you jamescross91, I only ever bought 1 WD hdd and so far been replaced twice.
WD 1.5tb bought, replaced 8months later, replancement replaced 14months later and now i'm on that.
saying that i bought a samsung 1.5tb before i bought the original WD and its working perfectly 0 replacements.
Personally would stay well clear of WD, even Novatech dont recommend them anymore, as they have had to replace quite a few, must have been a bad model, Samsung on the other had who have been bought by seagate like maxtor seem to be a lot better.

Seagate Go Flex slim is a good one for Windows and MAC. Stay away from Toshiba HDs as have experienced problems with those.

Just been looking at this Seagate Go Flex but have seen some reviews saying that even though it's compatible with Macs, it needs re-formatting to allow it to use Time Machine :o
