Opening a bank account

I am probably being a complete idiot, but I was wondering, is it possible to open a bank account in EIRE whilst being a resident in Northern Ireland?
As you would imagine it would be quite easy for me to just walk across the border, and open an account, but since Ireland is an EU member state, do you need an abode in Ireland, or just another member state?
