Lots of ideas already :) I would get some value dried fruit and buy some ready cut carrot sticks (asda used to do a big bag quite cheaply, just to save all that slicing and having them ready might encourage them to eat.) Crackers and peanut butter. Some value bread for sandwiches/toast if they really want something between meals and keep a batch of flapjacks/fairy cakes etc. Perhaps try to fill up after meals that are a suitable size for satisfying their appetite with hearty puds too? Surely then, they won't be reaching for more than a mid am and pm snack, unless they are bored? Tbh, I think I would be tempted to say "there's the available snack food, you eat anything else there's nothing to make your meals with."

    Thanks all,

10 x packs of cheap noodles - to eat as emergency snack and will make satay style noodles again for fridge.
Giant bag of basics carrots for HM colslaw and carrot sticks.
YS minced beef and pork - will make some giant meatballs n tomato sauce for freezer in 'eat me' portions
BOGOF cheddar - 1 grated for sandwiches
BOGOF rolls and B1G1HP square wraps.
Salad bits to be chopped ready to go in fridge
    BOGOF yoghurts
    Fruit for grabbing
Basics choc for HM muffins and choc chip cookies - some for freezer
    Half price cereal

Have also got ministrone soup in SC to be portioned up
HM bread in oven to be sliced and frozen into 'grab packs'

That should stave 'em off for the first week ;)

Thanks so much for your ideas - really helpful and very much appreciated xx

  • I feel for you. We got in last night after a weekend away racing and 17 yo DS had raided the fridge before OH and I had unloaded the van. 4 yoghurts, 2 pot mousses went in 5 minutes. just the remains scattered (well, neatly stacked) in the sitting room.

Apart from meals, he generally lives on saver yoghurts, dry sliced bread, cold pasta (or any leftovers from tea.).

One tip though is keep finding new hidey places for things like crisps, chocolate etc and bring things out gradually. In our house, everything is fair game - I have given up trying to put my dark chocolate in the fridge as by the time it is cold it has gone. - Gone are the days when you could hide food at the back of the top shelf in the fridge - he is bigger than me.
