I am using firefox 3.6.28 ( as I heard there were problems with later firefox versions on older computers, mine is 5 years old) with windows XP.

Recently tried to install IE8, (upgrading from IE6) as I have changed my energy supplier to EDF and the site to manage my account from will not load from firefox but will with IE. so I decided to upgrade to IE 8. My computer was still trying to install the update 8 hours after I started the install so I assumed something had gone wrong. I evenutually managed to get out of the install process but received an error message saying it had not completed and files were missing but I don't remember the message in detail as I was trying to switch off quickly before going to work.

IE8 appears to work and is able to access my account on EDF. Is it better that I go back to the restore point before IE8 and start again so I know the build is OK or uninstall IE8 from add and remove programs or soething else should I do. What is the difference between using the restore point or removeing the programme?

Can anyone help me please.

Run the standalone installer for IE8

That's no longer supported. Take a look at Palemoon v3.6.32

Should I remove the current IE8 or go back to the restore point before running this. Which is cleaner/better option?

Neither. The installer will remove the previous installation for you.

Not true. I have a 1.2 Mhz Duron machine about 2006 vintage and have always used the latest versions of Firefox without problems. FF14 is downloaded ready to install.

I downloaded the installer and when I ran it I got a blue screen with the message Bad_Pool_Caller and was told windows was shutting down.

I didn't know what to do from there, no keyboard buttons seem to work so I just switched the power off. On starting again I was told that the system had recovered from a serious error.

What do I do next please, uninstall IE8, go back to restore point or what. Can anyone advise please

It did work after the earlier install with the error message about missing files and it was IE8 but now it will not start up when I click in the icon or via start programmes. I can see it when I look in add and remove programmes..

I was going to look at firefox after I sorted out internet explorer
