scrapping a computer - what do I need to do to make it safe?

I've got a defunct old tower PC to ditch, I was thinking that someone from freecycle might be able to re-use some parts maybe? so I assume that to be safe I take out the hard drive but what do I do to make it safe? if I put in in the bin it can be found and used again so can I destroy it somehow? my best guess is a bucket…

We throw to much stuff away today and as this is a money saving website we should be trying to save money or save other people money.

The boot disk option then followed by reinstalling the OS is the way to go. Most people wouldn't want to get your data from a formatted harddrive, damaging the disk is just as bad as giving the pc to someone without wiping it in my book!
