Make easter eggs

Hi all
Does anyone make their own Easter Eggs? I found a bunny rabbit mould and an egg mould in the back of my cupboard but I don't know where to start
I think that maybe it will be cheaper to make my own, more personal & cut down on packaging.
Can anyone tell me the best chocolate to use and how to do it etc. I expect the kitchen to end up looking like Beirut but I am sure I will enjoy myself:rotfl::hello:Lukiesgirl

there are such good deals on easter eggs I reckon you would have trouble making them cheaper than buying them, but they will be so much nicer and more personal, as you say...
i would suggest you use the best chocolate you can afford to..
i noticed that tesco's finest have some nice eggs this year with a pile of nuts in the front, or you can add things to the chocolate to make it more yummy.. like dried fruit, peel, nuts, biscuit, etc
i've never made them myself, but i think you grease the mould a bit.. then pour in chocolate, building up layers until its the thickness you want, then leave to set, trim the cut edge and stick together by meltng it slightly so they bond...
wow.. im rambling.. sorry!!0 -
Thanks Charliee! Do you think it is possible to brush the choc onto the mould? All the kids in my family seem to be hypa after sweets & choc so I thought I could put something inside the egg with less additives so I guess I will need to put my thinking cap on!

There's some nice easter egg recipes on BBC Good Food site. I love the Chocolate Krispie Chick! :j It would be great for kids, and looks pretty easy. The Button Egg looks good for kids too and the Marbled one looks quite posh.

I make a lot of chocolates for occassions, eggs aren't too tricky to do except for joining the 2 halves together.
The best choclate you can get is your best plan, though I've tended to use cadbury's as everyone seems to like it and it's often on special offer (You can get very big bars for £2 in co-op ATM for instance).
I use a small mains powered heating appliance specifically for choclate but they can be costly so just use a bain marie to melt the chocolate. Then once melted you can add flavours, nuts, etc and then paint the mould with a new clean brush in layers. I usually wait until the previous layer has started to set off before doing the next. Then I run a pallette knife over the edges of the mould to give a cleaner edge for joining. If I'm in a rush I stick it into the deep freeze of our old chest freezer for an hour - after that it's set and can be popped out of the mould to do again.
Once you have both halves melt a little more chocolate (Or save some from earlier) and paint it onto the halves and then carefully put together.
This has always worked for me - though once I used too much chocolate for joining so in a crazy moment pressed small edible silver balls into it all the way around which actually looked rather good.
Have fun, best part is you get the leftover melted choccie from the bowlThe "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Thank you so much Plushroom & Anguk.:A
I did not think I would be able to use normal chocolate so I am pleased because I don't like the sound of this cooking choc. I am going to have a practice before Easter - it will be a hard job eating the disasters but I am willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for my family's happiness:rotfl:
My OH thinks I must be menapausal because I have started making cupcakes & collecting recipes from magazines:rotfl:He has a scared look on his face everytime I go into the kitchen!!!:hello:Lukiesgirl

Hi all - I have decided this year to make all my own Easter eggs. I tracked down a mould for a large egg and hve ordered (off ebay) another smaller mould which comes with the mould for lots of little eggs. Add to this the lolly moulds which I have and I think I will be fine. Have just this minute ordered the cellophane and ribbon to wrap them in to give a professional look to them!!
Really excited about giving them a try but wondered if anyone else does this (I am sure there are loads of you who do) and what tips you can give me to make the egg making easier
Thanks in advance to all you lovely people :EasterBunEmma

I've done this - I was rubbish at it and it cost far more than it would to have bought some nice eggs from Woolworths. (Woolworths - wow - that dates me)
I think you have to be all clever about tempering it on marble so it's shiny and doesn't have that greyish edge of hardened chocolate that has been melted - this bit was beyond me - my floor had a nice chocolate pattern for a while.
Then when I'd got the chocolate in the moulds I couldn't get it out again. When I used a big mould and did the brushing layers with melted chocolate I had an inch of chocolate at one end and a millimetre at the other!
Please don't let me put you off though (!) - If you are good at a. following instructions, b. waiting as long as you're supposed to c. creative AND talented (I'm creative but NOT talented) you'll make wonderful eggs.
I'm sorry I can't be more positive - just admitting my awesome lack of ability in this area!0 -
ha ha ha thank you ubamother
I didnt get any instructions with it so really have no idea how it is supposed to be doneI decided to melt some choc and pour a tiny bit into the moulds which had been in the freezer (only while the choc was melting). I then sort of moved the moulds around until there was a thin layer of choc all over and popped them in the fridge to set
I have no idea whether this will work or not but have tried it with cheap choc to start with :rotfl:My concern with my plan was that if more choc is needed then it might layer and come out looking like a tree trunk!!
Had never thought about them NOT coming out the mould and didnt think about whether or not they would be shiny - mind you not sure whether or not that bit bothers me.........
Any other suggestions or tips???
ETA - i am neither creative or talented so beginning to panic slightly :rotfl:Emma

Hi elf,
There is some advice and links on this earlier thread that may help:
Make easter eggs
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.
