Carer's Premium

Good afternoon,

I've recently started claiming carer's allowance. At present i'm a carer full-time and do now work
A friend was telling me i may be entitled to Income Support and Carer's Premium?

Is this correct? If so what would my weekly entitlement(s) be?

Also i'm considering getting my own place (as i understand it i dont have to live with the person i care-fore 24/7) and im looking into Housing Benefit, does my Carers Allowance effect this? and again what would my entitlement be? I'm 29 and as I understand it your age determines how much you get.

It's all a minefield and I'm not sure which figures are correct.
Any advice greatly appreciated

Thank you

Yes if you get carer's allowance you can then also get income support (with a carer's premium). That of course is means tested and will only be paid depending on what income and savings you have.

In that case phone the income support people to start a claim and they will go through everything with you. sounds like you should get it but they will take you through hundreds of questions wanting to know about this that and everything

Good luck finding a 1 bedroom place with a council or housing association house or flat with this bed room tax that's coming in april plus your under 35, i think you will be getting less HB also, i'd stay where you are if all possible more money in your pocket.

Any idea how much HB I would get? Does my carers allowance give me an extra premium? Theres no point me even starting to look for a place if there's no way i'll be able to afford it

You need to look at your housing allowance rate on your local council website.

As you are twenty nine you will be entitled to the shared house rate not a one bed flat.

On the plus side you would be entitled to HB and CTB.

    First apply for your IS.

Then see if you can find a room in a shared house for the amount that you are allowed.

Since you will be claiming IS you will be entitled to the full HB and CTB.

your carers allowance would be dedicted from your income support, but a carers premium would be added. your benefit entitlement would be approx £102 ish a week before housing and council tax benefit

you dont get income support plus carers premium plus carers allowance

    £103.60 total benefit.

You would be entitled to full Council Tax Benefit.

As earlier stated your help with rent is dependant on your area's rates.

In my area you would be entitled to £56.25 per week based on you being under 35, in private rental for the shared room rate.

If you manage to get housed by a housing assosciation/social landlord you would receive full assistance towards your rent.

Usually you would apply through your local council, in my area it's called the property pool
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
