Options
HI,

PLease direct me to the thread if there is one but I've got a big desktop at home gathering dust and I want to get rid of it.

ARe there specific ways to discpose of them? Or can I even make a bit of cash by disposing it?

Put it on Freecycle or take it to your local recycling centre.

By all means make money from it, but make sure you securely erase the data from it. You have a number of choices to do this:
    1) Darik's Boot And Nuke
    2) Remove and destroy the harddrive
    3) Both #1 and #2 for extra security
    4) Remove and keep the harddrive

Take it to bits and see if you can sell any of the parts to CEX

Depends how old it is. If it's a core2duo its still got some value, anything much older than that and its a museum piece, basically worthless.

Whatever you do securely wipe the hard drive first, or take it out and destroy it.

Take the hard drive out and keep it, unless you KNOW that there's no personal data thereon.

Put it on eBay. People will always buy older machines for parts compatible with other older machines. You'll get something, possibly not too much, but something.

Keeping the hard drive is also 100% secure, isn't it ....?

Yes but not nearly as much fun :)

Being sensible, I usually use the old hard drive as a second hard drive on the new computer - easily done on desktops. Handy for those files that you missed when backed up to DVD.
