I have a son called Charlie - he's fab and I'm sure your son will be too. It's a great name.
Welcome to the world of parenthood. It's a funny game - has its ups and its downs but you will never swap it for the world.

Wow, I go on holiday to the DFW board for a week and look what happens we have a new generation of MSE'ers! I was hoping he would hold out until my birthday next sunday.
I hadn't read this since I last posted as I couldn't find it so I will do a quick update.
Snowball says that at the beginning of April 2010 I will owe £41238.72 on my mortgage and £11193.40 to my Mum. Total = £52,432.12.
So my target is to repay the savings of £2907.38 and owe £50000 or less.
I must focus and start spending on a credit card.

  • Congratulations and best wishes TYAE, welcome to the rewarding and stretching, wonderful world of parenthood! It really is the most rewarding thing in life, and our children are often our greatest teachers - well, mine were!! My two girls are now 26 and 28, and sadly not living nearby, but always in my thoughts.

And when the kids are young, you get to enjoy playtime all over again, which is great fun. I loved revisiting things I had really enjoyed as a child, along with introducing my daughters to them, and enjoying them together - magic!

I'm a reader of this thread, I'm on a quest to pay off my remaining mortgage too. Although it's 'only' £9,600, (was £36,000 in 2002) my health is currently challenged and I've gone down to a 3-day week permanently, take home pay per month is now £888 and budgeted outgoings are around £820. (I work in the voluntary sector and pay out around £150 per month in expenses from personal income, claimable the next month so I have to keep a cushion within my income to allow for that). However, nil desperandum, I've now taken in a lodger - rent-a-room rules mean that is £330 tax-free (thank goodness). I'm lucky to have the spare accommodation - she has her own sitting room and seperate bedroom, so apart from sharing kitchen and bathroom, we have our own space.

I have an offset mortgage (Woolwich) so have moved all my cash savings (£6,100) into the offset current account. I used my ISA allowances for the past 2 years to invest money I inherited from my dear father's estate.

Re this financial year, I'm going to leave the cash in the offset, I'm not well enough to deal with too many complicated movings around of savings for the small amount of extra interest I might get from an ISA.

My mission is to put any money left at the end of the month, plus ALL of the lodger's payments into the offset account. We Scots have a saying, 'many a mickle maks a muckle', i.e. small savings add up!!

I wish you all well with your 3-year quest - are occasional contributors and encouragers like me welcome to post too, or do you wish to keep postings to the partcipants?

All the best and thanks for this thread, I'm greatly enjoying reading it and wish you all good MSE progress as time goes on!!

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.
