A way around the 2% balance transfer fees

Just a quick one...

I recently signed up for the abbey national c.card - 0% for 9months.
When I received the forms to sign, in the small print was "a 2% bt fee is payable", not advertised at the start.
I rang up, explained that I was originally going to transfer £3,500 - however, I wasn't prepared to pay a 2% fee (£70) & so could they cancel the card & I would go elsewhere.
The girl asked me to hold while she spoke to her superviser. She came back with an offer of a capped bt fee of £30 !!!

See what happens when you just ask...

    Hi Vickitoria,

I thought Abbey was 2% capped at £35 as standard, it's in my T@C's on the agreement, I transferred £4,500 yesterday and was charged £35, no amount of pleading could sway her unfortunately!

  • 2% (min. £2 , max.£35) may apply when you transfer balances and will always apply when you write a credit card cheque. This is quoted from abbey site. I am hoping to get an abbey cc next month, when my Halifax-1 interest free period ends. ! need about 10k. I am choosing abbey as I bank with them. Was hoping not to pay anything for BT. Has anybody got away with it?

Yes. I filled in a slip attached to the envelope supllied to return the signed t&c's. If you request the balance transfer then and the slip advises no charge will be made you will not have to pay. You can only BT 90% of credit limit though
