I don't object to them reselling the ticket. Obviously it make sense, they wouldn't be running a very profitable business if they didn't. I'd just like a little sympathetic customer service when it comes to situations like this.

Well yes, they aren't happy to refund or transfer the ticket therefore keeping MY money but are happy to take a second sum of money for the same ticket. Commercial ticket touting?!
everyone esle has said it already but you bought a non transferable, non refundable ticket which was much much cheaper than a fully flexible ticket.
would you prefer all airlines to sell only fully flexible/refundable tickets at 2 or 3 times the price?
On the subject of travel insurance has everyone else in your party got insurance, it doesnt help with any refunds (and wouldnt anyway given the circumstances) but you all should have bought insurance at the same time as buying the tickets0
