Cleared virgin credit card but yet they have taken another payment?

Hi, sorry if this is in wrong place!
I cleared my virgin credit card three weeks ago and have just logged in to my Halifax current account to see that virgin have taken £70.24 putting me in to an overdraft charged at £2 per day. I am so so mad as I'm trying very hard to pay all my debts back ASAP. I get paid on Friday so was really pleased that for the first time in a very long time I wasn't going to be getting charged £2 per day for using overdraft. I'm not sure what the next step is to get my money back from virgin alive never had this happen before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance x

    Was this due to residual interest being added?

  • Hi, I don't think it's interest! I had logged on to check that all was ok with final payment to credit card last week and it was showing as £0 balance and £0 for next direct debit.

    But if u had a statement balance last time, that what would be claimed regardless of any other payments made..
  • Thanks very much for advice, much appreciated at this time of night :0) My virgin account is now sitting at £70.24 credit. I cleared the balance on my card 3 days after my last direct debit in June so really thought that would have been the end of it. Just hoping its easy enough to get my money back from them.

    This is something that does appear on the forums quite often.

    Virgin always take the DD payment, even if another payment is made, it is mentioned on statements and when setting up a DD.

    Pretty sure it's also mentioned if you make an additional payment online as well.

    They will possibly issue a cheque to you, but you might have to contact them first.
  • :wave: I did the same thing. A quick phone call and within 2 days the money was back into my account. They were really efficient and helpful. HTH :)

    From Virgin;

    "Important: Confirmation of the set-up of your Direct Debit Instruction

    If you make manual payments to your account once the direct debit has been activated, these will not reduce the amount that we will collect by Direct Debit, unless you advise us at least seven working days prior to the Direct Debit being collected."

    All mbna statements (including Virgin) always say very clearly that the DD will always be taken regardless of any other payments made. It's not hidden away in small print.

    You should have reduced the payment by the amount of the known DD, or telephoned them to say that you'd paid the full balance and asked them not to take the DD on this occasion.

  • The same happened to me. When I called ot question it they transferred the payment straight back in to my bank account with no fuss.

    Many companies do the same thing. American Express for example is exactly the same. Additional payments make no difference.
