Network Music

Options
I am looking for an explanation in simple words, to solve my problem.

I have music on a desktop and laptop and therefore have two copies, both of which are slightly different. It's also a pain when one machine is off and what I want is on it.

I would like to try to move all the music into one place, sort it out and then be able to access it from any networked device. I would also like to be able to put photos on the same device for access.

We currently have a desktop with wireless adaptor, a wireless laptop, a Sky wireless broadband router and am hoping to get an ipad.

What would be the simplest way of doing this?

NAS , i use a buffalo 1 TB box, but I also keep copies on each of my discreet boxes too eg my 2 PC's and my Lappy, for resilience/redundancy. From my ipad i use 8player, because I have a WDTVLive Hub and a Humax FoxsatHDR so I can stream all of my media to anything and use VLC on my PC's

Sounds like you need a NAS (Network Attached Storage) unit, there's loads of them about: Western Digital MyBook, Netgear ReadyNAS, QNAP, Synology, Drobo etc.
  • I also suggest the Buffalo NAS (Network Attached Storage).

If you don't have too much music and you want a cheaper alternative you could try "sync toy" on the laptop to keep 2 copies of your music the same on both the Desktop and Laptop ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155 )

Share a folder on the desktop and set sync toy to "contribute" which will make both folders the same.

If you put music and photos all in one place, have you considered backups?

You could copy everything from desktop to laptop, then use a duplicate file finder to sort them out.
