No claims discount

Not sure if anyone can help, my husband and I have just returned to the UK after living in France for 5 and a half years.
When we went to France we produced our 70% no claim discount evidence and our french insurers honoured them and gave us the maximum allowed ih France. Since returning we have been making enquiries about insuring our french car which we have brought with us to the UK. We are being told that our french no claim discount is useless and will not be accepted and we have top start accruing our discount here from scratch.
Is this possible I thought we were all in the EU and that these things should be accepted where ever you live and drive. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did they resolve it.
