Fit Note needed for ESA?

Is a fit note required to claim ESA Contribution based? My husband is being medically discharged from the forces and will need to claim ESA for his NI contributions only as he won't qualify for any other help.

Fit notes haven't been issued for the whole time since his injury almost two years ago. When he leaves the forces his medical care will also finish and there will be a gap of approx 8 days until he will be able to register with a new doctor (due to house move to other side of country) Will this cause problems claiming ESA or do we just wait until we get to our new home to start the process?

We are very confused about the whole ESA process, any help would be gratefully received.

  • Yes, a fit note is required to claim ESA. Your new GP may backdate it to his discharge date, but that would be at their discretion.

If the injury has existed for 2 years then it might be worth claiming DLA - which isn't income-related.

He could/should also approach his existing 'GP' - or however this is setup in the forces - about a 'fit note' - that will cover him from when he leaves.
Assuming for the moment that he has an unarguable entitlement to ESA.

The 'fit note' does not have to be only issued by the GP.

If he's being MD he should inquire about the forces compensation scheme.

Thanks for all your replies. We will ask his current GP if a fit note can be issued prior to discharge but I'm not sure that will cover him for post service period.

DLA is already in payment as we expected that to take a long time we applied early.

He has had an interim payment from AFCS of £6k but he is unable to walk unaided, struggles to talk, has cognitive, memory problems and anxiety amongst a catalogue of other issues - he cannot work. As I have had to give up work last year to look after him money will be tight when he leaves.

We were hoping to get his NI contributions paid.

Then you might be eligible for carer's allowance?
