Redundant, renting and mortgage

Hi,
I am soon to be made redundant and in rented accommodation with family, we moved for schools and could not sell our house so rent it out, obviously this has a mortgage on it...just covered by rent.
Finding a new job to go to is not looking that easy.
Redundancy will clear debt but not much else, with no income coming in, where do I stand if I have to sign on and claim housing benefit... never done this before!!
Will the fact that we own a house that is rented out effect things?

I believe it will be a problem (please correct me if I'm wrong) to get housing benefit whilst owning and renting out another home. I think you can get help with mortgage relief which should cover the cost of the interest on the mortgage, and then income support etc. I'm pretty sure though that you won't get housing benefit in your current circumstances. Kind of makes sense if you think about it. Otherwise, everyone could do it and then end up with a house 25 years on that the state has basically paid for. Again, I may well be wrong, and am happy to be corrected otherwise. Sorry it's not too positive.0

I wouldnt pay your debts off to start with, you may have to live on the money. If you apply for any means tested benefits it will make a difference if you have spent it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
